THROW BACK TO THE FUTURE

It feels funny-weird―to see yourself in your son's kid.

Take for example three year old Natalie, our apo this part of the planet (USA; the other two, Joaqui and Charlize, live Down Under).

"You look just like her," my older sisters tell me, recalling how cute I was when I was that age―wide eyed, expressive nose (like an airplane taking off the runway), pouty lips; and because just like Natalie, I sported full bangs with my bob.

I probably score higher in the tantrum department. Natalie may scream louder―enough to shatter a mirror; but my tantrums were wilder. A face-the-wall is all she ever gets. I remember getting the belt after Tatay caught me throwing shoes and bakya from the top of the stairs on my biggest tantrum yet. I never dared throw another after that.

One big tantrum prior resulted in my high chair keeling over and me falling with it. (Yes, may high chair na nung panahon ko!) Taught me to never to kick and misbehave at dinnertime.

This same deja vu feeling comes when I realize that my habits―such as the way I house-clean, dish-wash or recycle food into new dishes―are throwbacks from my mother's ways.

I even see in my convoluted shape today her multi-storied tummy and exact same wrinkles which she used to slather with tons of lotion. No wonder I go gaga over lotions, especially at my age.

Our hereditary characteristics or looks are of course a function of our DNA. But we also become our mother or father's clone as we unconsciously take on their habits, be they good or bad.

We can't do much about the way we look, can we? But parents can nurture children of character through their example, their works speaking louder than their words, and guided by biblical truths:

Luke 6:43―"For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit."

Proverbs 22:6―"Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old he will not depart from it."

The most valuable inheritance? A character of integrity!

Material riches perish. The acquiring of knowledge stops at some point. Beauty fades. But a godly character can see one through thick and thin, giving him the passion to pursue his God-given purpose―till the very end of his life.

2Timothy 1:5―"For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well."

Reared by devoted Christian women, Timothy, the apostle Paul's trainee, pursued a calling which dramatically touched lives.

Kids will be kids. They will always want to have their way. Natalie is at that stage, testing her limits. But for as long as the adults around her keep the love-discipline balance, she'll grow up to be a fine individual, just like her parents.

"Come closer to me, you might fall off the bed," Natalie cautioned her mom as they snuggled in bed.

"Nice shoes, Lola Yay!" said she when she happened to glace at my feet when I stepped into the car.

Hmm… the makings of character?

BEHOLDING GOD'S GLORY

Once in a while, awesome gets to be endless wow-some.

We tasted that in a recent three-day road trip (Thanks, Carlo and Opal.) spanning 1,600 miles across California, Nevada and Arizona.

Wow number one: Las Vegas, as usual pulsing with its mesmerizing lights and sounds―post the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. We got a glimpse of our Pambansang Kamao's fighting form plastered on buses plying its busy streets.

Vegas is of course gamblers' paradise. But I've witnessed families fall apart due to gambling so I wasn't that thrilled; especially since its hotels cum casinos reeked of cigarette smoke.

Las Vegas always reminded me of the Lord's encounter (Matthew 4:1-11) with the devil who took Him to a very high mountain to show off the world's kingdoms and their splendor.

"All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me," (v 9).

Brainless devil! How could man-made grandeur compare with the magnificence of God's handiwork?

Grand Canyon versus Las Vegas? No contest!

From Vegas, we drove eight hours to Williams City prior to Grand Canyon, Arizona; on the way stopping by the Hoover Dam (Boulder City, Nevada), an immense arch-gravity dam built for flood control, irrigation and hydroelectric power. Regarded as a man-made wonder even if constructed back in 1931, the Hoover Dam is a testament to man's God-given ability to tackle seemingly impossible tasks.

But Hoover Dam itself is puny compared to the other wows which awaited us:

The Grand Canyon―magnificence beyond compare. It's like beholding God―probably the same reverential fear experienced by Moses when God spoke to Him from the burning bush.

Exodus 3:5―"Do not come any closer, God said. Take off your sandals, for the place you're standing is holy ground."

Of course, instead of taking my rubber shoes off, I shot away.  But pictures alone could not convey this overwhelming wonder in the presence of God's glory. It's as if I've touched the face of God and lived to tell it all.

1 Chronicles 29:11―"Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and the earth is yours."

This verse resonated as we passed plains, mountains, hills, plateaus, and valleys―all differently hued and textured either with giant boulders, rock gardens, endless sand dunes, forests and intimidating wildernesses; acres and acres of wheat and vegetable plantations, windmill farms, cow pasturelands and ranches; while the heavens stared at us through crying clouds or clouds pregnant with rain, and happy clouds of whipped creams, crocodile, chariot, French bread or whatever we imagined. We even had some snow the eve of our Grand Canyon adventure.

Good thing our GPS directed us to the back roads of Nevada, Arizona and California, not the usual freeways. Our wows just would not let up.

How surreal is that? Alice's wonderland does not even come close. A grace avalanche, indeed!

CLIMBING THE LADDER OF GOD'S APPROVAL

https://bcurrie.files.wordpress.com
"How good is good enough?" asked Chris Hornbrook, lead Pastor of Momentum Christian Church (Chula Vista, San Diego).

To re-paraphrase his words: If there's a ladder of goodness, you'll probably put Mother Teresa in the ladder's topmost rung; murderers at the lowest part; and maybe most of us somewhere in the middle because we're probably so-so do-gooders and minor sinners.

When we compare ourselves with others, our tendency is to work harder to win God's approval, he said. So Pastor Hornbrook challenged us: Stop putting yourself on trial. Get off the ladder, and instead see yourself the way God sees you.

That's why the Gospel is GOOD news!

"We are more wicked than we ever dared believe." (Romans 3:23―for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.)

BUT! "We are more LOVED and ACCEPTED in Christ than we ever dared hope." (Romans 3:16― For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.)

So quit running the I-am-more-good-than-him-or-her race. We're all in the same boat: Sinners all. Nothing you accomplish can make Him love you more. And even if you fail miserably, God's love-cum- forgiveness is continuously poised to grab you from total disaster.

It is because of His amazing grace through Christ Jesus who died for everyone, (1 Timothy 2:4-5) because God "desires that all men be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus…"

How then should we respond to this great love so graciously poured out through Christ? Accept Him as Lord and Savior; and obey Him!

In Luke 19:41-42, Jesus wept for Jerusalem and wished that people would understand the way to peace.

Peace with their Maker and themselves and their fellowmen. This is what everyone needs especially during times of trial, inadequacy, lack or when our long-held values are put to a test.

So if you've heard the gospel and committed your life to Jesus, shouldn't you all the more share Jesus―the only way to peace? He's the only change-maker, not our own effort to be good. Because once He gives our heart a make-over, the Holy Spirit starts molding our thoughts to enable us to obey.

https://forwardwalkingdotcom2.files.wordpress.com
Then we can freely obey Matthew 28:19-20: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Then, they too will stop climbing the goodness ladder; but will instead be led by His Spirit to freely obey, not through their own efforts, but through His grace and His Spirit.

WHAT IF YOUR LOVED TAKES HIS OWN LIFE?

Do you know of someone who tried and succeeded to end his life?

source:scriptmag.com
Teenage suicides have grown exponentially worldwide―with bullying, including cyber-bullying, as one of the major factors.

A website (save.org) notes that suicide is the tenth leading cause of death for all ages in the US, with male deaths accounting for 79% of all suicides. The World Health Organization (WHO): Suicide is the third leading cause of death worldwide for those aged 15-44.

Depression is cited as the main reason for committing suicide.

For most of us, these are just statistics. But what if your son or daughter or any of your loved ones has been added to the numbers?

It is agonizing enough to lose a family member to cancer or old age; what more if it's suicide? "I can't understand it. Why, God?" would probably hound a parent facing such situation.

It is even more agonizing if we imagine suicide's consequence. "Where would his soul go?" Because we know that suicide (along with other sins such as pride, stealing, lust, lying, etc.―all of which the bible lumps as "sin," no major or minor), puts one in a state of rebellion against God; and a reason for eternal separation from Him.

Romans 3:23―"For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard." But let the rest of His Word help us make sense of it:

Proverbs 28:13 says that those who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.

The gospel offers hope. I believe in my heart that if one asks God for forgiveness, even through his final breath, Jesus will save him―because it's all by His grace!

source: chosenfamilies.org
Ephesians 2:8-9―"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.…"

Remember the thief hung on another cross beside Jesus? Luke 23:42-43:

"Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom,” he asked Jesus.

Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

A last minute plea! Yet Jesus promised to save him. Jesus didn't ask questions, or imposed conditions. Seeing his repentant heart, He immediately reached out with grace.

The love of God! That's the reason Jesus willingly died on the cross―that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:7-8). God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Because if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9)―and ultimately save us from hell.

His grace is rich―enough to redeem us from sin through His blood! Ephesians 1:7.
Oh yes, it's like being saved through the skin of your teeth. But that is Jesus! Full of grace and mercy, willing to reach out to the very end.

A family mourned for a son who ended his life this way. He once professed Jesus as his Lord and Savior; but somehow made wrong choices. Loved ones never stopped praying.

I believe deep in my heart that their prayers have been answered―that before this beloved son breathed his last, Jesus offered him one last chance with His amazing, unending grace.

"Grievous though my sin,
Jesus saves, Jesus saves!
A repentant, trusting heart,
that's all He asks of me."

PINOY PRIDE: CUT OUT OR TRAINED TO WIN?

What qualifies one to be a champion in any field?

Introducing Calista Reyes―Chloe to family and friends. This five-foot 15-year old freshman at Rancho Bernardo High is currently the toast of the San Diego (California) Filipino community and the US golfing community as well.

Based on her current golfing trajectory, the Junior Golf Scoreboard has ranked her 9th nationally (US) and 2nd for California's graduating class 2018.

Michael Bower, writing for Pomerado News, described her as "low-key, quiet and reserved—but inside she is booming with confidence… has relentless passion to win." Bower quotes Tim Steigerwald, the Broncos' head coach who's credited with 199 career victories in 12 years:

“You wouldn’t peg her as a top golfer in the county by looking at her. What most people don’t see is her consistency off the tee, her ability to keep the ball in play and out of trouble, and her short game. Some say golf, when played at a high level, is 90 per cent between the ears,” he added. “Her 90 per cent is better than most.”

Chloe was named the 2014 San Diego Junior Golf Association Player of the year (13/14 division). “Since I have been playing a lot of big tournaments against all of those girls (on Torrey Pines) and other top players, I feel like I play good under pressure,” she said.

Chloe is my niece Cheryl's only child; one of my sister Marcia's seven grandkids, all equally gifted in their own right.

I asked Chloe why she's such a winner. "I'm hard-working, confident and happy," she replied with a smile―without a tinge of pride, just the voice of innocence, one at home with winning and excelling. Here's a 15 year old girl quite focused and determined, raised by parents Cheryl and Arnold who encouraged her to explore her gifts, while seeing to it that she leads a balanced teen-life.

Mom Cheryl: "… the reason she excels is because she has the passion for what she does, backed by her willingness and discipline to practice hard. She does not complain… loves to compete and her mind is set that she can do it."

Off-course and school, Chloe is a typical teenager who loves to sing, read, draw, watch movies and musicals and dabble with Instagram. During her grandparents' 50th recent wedding anniversary, she sang "Kahit Maputi na Ang Buhok Ko".

I remember her as a bright-eyed four year old who genuinely loved to read books and regale us with her invented songs and stage presentations with her younger cousin Alee.

Faithfulness is second nature to Chloe who has maintained a 4.0 GPA in school. This, as well as her golfing feats, have courted the interest of universities which have invited her to their degree programs.

Matthew 25:21―His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'

Our talents or possessions are gifts from God, to be used for His glory―lesson we can learn from Chloe.

ARE YOU A JESUS FAN OR FOLLOWER?

"It's easy to be a fan," says James Grogan, pastor of Eastlake church, Chula Vista.

"A fan's investment level is shallow―easy to tune in and out."

Then he added, "That's how many people treat Jesus today."

Ooops, was he talking to me?

Come to think of it, it is fun to be a Jesus fan.  Wonderful praise and worship at church every Sunday.  Messages and lessons that make you go "Wow!" or teary-eyed. Emotional roller coaster rides as we praise and raise our hands to hail King Jesus.

And yes, we hit "like" and "share" and get all worked up inside when we encounter biblical sound-bites and inspirational videos on FB.

There's really nothing wrong with all doing all these. But if we think they're the essence of Christianity, then we've got it all wrong. Christianity is not a dress you wear on Sunday;it's who you are 24/7.

"Jesus didn't invite people to become His fans but followers," adds Pastor Grogan.

“Come, follow me and I will send you out to fish for people," Jesus said to Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew (Matthew 4:19)

Pastor Grogan: "Jesus is our Coach. He wants to develop us, take our talent and maximize it to fulfill His mission. As His apprentices, we must learn His ways, living for His purpose."

As Christ's disciples, we are not to just sit as spectators but allow ourselves to be at the center of His will, becoming more and more like Him as we get to know Him better as revealed by scriptures.

So go ahead, sing and shout and praise and worship. Have a great emotional experience. But don't stop there. Once you get out of church or your prayer closet, start loving like Jesus. Show compassion as Jesus did. Pray as Jesus did. Reach out to others as Jesus did. Share as Jesus did.

Change! That's what Jesus brings. Blind Bartimaeus cried out to Jesus and got his sight back; then he followed Jesus. The Samaritan woman encountered The Living Water and enthusiastically brought her community to Jesus.

Jesus had fans for sure. Multitudes went all agog and followed Him wherever He went. Thousands got to enjoy His meals for free.

But these same people who cried "Hosanna!" when Jesus was entering Jerusalem likewise shouted "Crucify Him!"

As we go deeper into Holy Week, ask yourself: Am I just one with the multitude, raving for, then hating Jesus; or like Peter and Andrew, am I really His follower?

Am I just going through the motions of religion; but when push comes to shove, do I deny or disobey Him?

Paul realized the result of Christ's mission―our reconciliation with the Father; and that he needed to do as Christ:  "We loved you so much that we shared with you not only God's good news but our own lives too"  (1 Thessalonians 2:8).

Are we His, in words and in deed?

REMEMBER HIS GOODNESS!

How's your RQ (remembering quotient) ?

If you're a gorgeous senior like me trying to salvage whatever's left of your youth by taking health supplements, you sometimes find yourself asking:

The brain's hippocampus--memory center.
"Did I take them or didn't I? Or was it yesterday that I did that?"

Then, ding, ding, ding; after a lot of digging and shoveling down memory pit, you remember, "Yes, I did take my vitamins, just after breakfast!"

Experts say our brain's hippocampus (part of the brain's limbic system which also triggers our emotional responses) processes bits of information from short to long-term memory.

"By the time people reach their 80s, they may have lost as much as 20 percent of the nerve connections in the hippocampus," says psychologist  Kendra Cherry (psychology.about.com).

OMG! Oh my goodness! What was that again?

That's why I always pray, Lord, renew my mind and my brain cells."

Nature is our health cabinet. For example, nutrition specialists say that turmeric, a powerful anti-inflammatory and memory booster, boosts brain power.  When God said "It's finished!" after He created the universe, he indeed provided everything we needed to live healthy and content.

But what should we remember more than our daily vitamins? Our times with loved ones. Our victories. Even our tribulations, for their lessons―because those were when God intervened, healed, provided, kept us safe. Even our daily teeny-weeny blessings. All "Thank you, Lord!"moments.

Many books in the bible recall God's amazing miracles for the Israelites especially as they journeyed through the wilderness.

Crossing the Red Sea by Rosemarie Adcock  (Image credit: http://images.fineartamerica.com)
God it seems is in the habit of reminding us, "I've carried, protected and provided for you! Why do you still insist in doing things your way?"

Joshua 24:12-13―"And I sent terror ahead of you to drive out the two kings of the Amorites. It was not your swords or bows that brought you victory. I gave you land you had not worked on, and I gave you towns you did not build—the towns where you are now living. I gave you vineyards and olive groves for food, though you did not plant them."

Remembering His deeds refreshes us with a flood of God's love and grace to go on in spite of problems:

"You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy," the Father told Jesus as He was being baptized and the Spirit descended on Him. Even Jesus needed to be reminded of that prior to the cross which bridged us back to the Father's embrace.

So must we remember, daily, so that "we would not abandon the Lord and serve other gods" (Joshua 24:16).  Remember, He is great and mighty, yet loving and gracious.

That's why Joshua exhorted, "… Choose today whom you will serve… But as for me and my family, we will serve the LORD almighty" (Joshua 24:15).  So fear the LORD and serve him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshiped" (verse14).

Oh Lord, help us to not forget your great love.
